Universities in China 2027: Rankings, Admissions, Tuition, Scholarships & Study Guide
China’s 3,196-institution headline is not a 3,196-university list, and its undergraduate programme-placement statistics are not a count of separate universities; classification matters before comparison.
China is one of the world’s largest higher-education systems and one of the fastest-rising university systems in global rankings. For a student planning for 2027, however, a useful guide must separate five different questions: how large the system is, which universities are strongest for the student’s subject, how an international applicant is admitted, what the exact programme costs, and which scholarship and visa rules apply.
The Ministry of Education’s current national list, dated 17 June 2026, records 3,196 higher-education institutions: 2,952 regular HEIs, including 1,412 undergraduate institutions and 1,540 higher vocational/college institutions, plus 244 adult HEIs.
