Canada’s university choice now sits inside a moving immigration framework, so a 2027 shortlist that ignores DLI status, study-permit rules and post-graduation eligibility is incomplete.
Canada remains one of the world’s most visible study destinations, but its international-student environment has changed substantially. A 2027 guide therefore needs to combine the university system with the current immigration, cost, work and post-graduation rules rather than simply reproduce an old alphabetical directory.
The official Government of Canada EduCanada portal states that Canada has 100 public universities and about 16,000 university programs. International students must then distinguish a university from the wider Designated Learning Institution system, because DLI status is the immigration gateway for study-permit purposes and not every DLI is a university.
