Universities in Australia 2027: Official 42 Universities, Rankings, Admissions & Study Guide
Australia’s 42-university list, TEQSA register and CRICOS system answer three different questions—and mixing them is the fastest way to build a bad shortlist.
Australia is one of the world’s most internationally visible higher-education destinations, but a useful 2027 university guide needs to do more than repeat a ranking table or an old directory. The current Australian Government Study Australia list states that the country has 42 universities: 36 public and 6 private. That is the appropriate current starting point for a university-only list.
The wider higher-education system is larger. TEQSA, the national higher-education regulator, reported 213 registered higher-education providers across multiple provider categories at 30 June 2025. CRICOS separately records providers and courses approved for people studying in Australia on Student visas. These systems answer different questions, and treating them as interchangeable creates misleading university counts.
