How Hard Is MIT Admission? Acceptance Rate, SAT/ACT, Requirements & Deadlines

In MIT’s published Class of 2029 statistics, the Institute received 29,281 first-year applications and admitted 1,334 students, an overall admission rate of about 4.6%. MIT uses its own application system rather than the Common Application. Early Action is non-binding. Applicants should not assume that applying early creates an automatic admissions advantage; the more important operational benefit is having a complete application ready sooner.

SAT or ACT: required

MIT requires either the SAT or ACT for first-year admission in the current cycle. It does not state a preference between the two tests. MIT also superscores, meaning it considers a student’s strongest section performance across valid test sittings according to its current policy.

For the Class of 2029, the middle 50% of admitted students scored 780–800 in SAT Math, 740–780 in SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing, and 34–36 on the ACT composite.

Those are not minimum scores. They show how strong the admitted pool was.

The decision implication is important: a score below the middle range does not automatically disqualify an applicant, and a score inside or above it does not guarantee admission. MIT evaluates the full application.

English-language testing for international applicants

MIT does not require every international applicant to submit a separate English proficiency test. International students should not try to convert every local qualification into a U.S.-style GPA unless MIT explicitly asks them to do so. The school should report records in the form used by the student’s education system, with translation where required.

Interviews

MIT may offer an interview with an Educational Counselor when interviewer capacity is available. An applicant who is not offered an interview because no interviewer is available is not supposed to be penalized for that absence.

Application fee and fee waiver

Apply if the academic environment genuinely fits your goals, your school record shows strong preparation, you can present a coherent application, and you understand that rejection is common even among exceptionally qualified students.

The arithmetic matters. A student comparing universities on tuition alone would miss more than $26,000 in MIT’s standard annual budget.

Health insurance can add materially to the bill

Students must maintain qualifying health-insurance coverage. The MIT Student Health Insurance Plan, or SHIP, is $5,148 for student-only coverage in 2026–27 according to MIT’s 2026–27 student budget information. Students who meet MIT’s waiver requirements may be able to waive that charge.

The cost decision for undergraduates is therefore not “Can my family pay $92,760?” The better question is “What will MIT calculate as our family contribution after need-based aid?”

Can International Students Get Financial Aid at MIT? Need-Blind Admission & Aid Explained

MIT’s financial-aid policy is one of the most consequential facts in this profile. The university states that undergraduate admission is need-blind for international as well as domestic applicants and that it meets 100% of demonstrated financial need for admitted students who apply for aid.
