Universities in Argentina 2027: Rankings, Fees, Admissions & Scholarships
Best Public and Private Universities, International Student Rules, Spanish Requirements and Student Residence
Universities in Argentina offer one of Latin America’s broadest mixes of public, private and provincial higher education. For students comparing universities in Argentina for 2027, the clearest global-ranking headline is the Universidad de Buenos Aires — UBA — at No. 84 in the QS World University Rankings 2027, making it the country’s highest-ranked institution in that edition. Argentina’s official May 2026 register is much larger: it contains 147 institutions across four main domestic university-level categories, plus two separately classified international or foreign-university presences.
International students also need to understand an important change. Since 2025, federal law allows state higher-education institutions to charge students who do not fall within the guaranteed free-study categories, including foreign students without permanent residence. But this is not a single nationwide foreign-student tuition charge: universities retain institution-level policies, and UBA currently states that its undergraduate degree studies are free for Argentine and foreign students.
That combination makes Argentina a destination where rankings, legal status, university policy, language, program recognition and immigration status all need to be checked together.
Argentina Universities at a Glance
- Highest-ranked university in QS 2027: Universidad de Buenos Aires — No. 84 worldwide.
- Second-highest Argentine institution in QS 2027: Universidad Nacional de La Plata — =474.
- Official May 2026 system: 64 national/state institutions, 54 definitively authorised private institutions, 19 provisionally authorised private institutions and 10 recognised provincial institutions.
- Main domestic-category total: 147.
- Special categories in the official register: FLACSO Argentina and a University of Bologna representation.
- Main teaching language: Spanish is central to most full-degree study; individual universities set their own language requirements.
- Public-university tuition: do not assume one rule for every foreign student or university.
- Admissions: applications are handled by individual universities rather than one national university application portal.
- Quality control: students should distinguish recognised institutions, nationally valid degrees and CONEAU accreditation where applicable.
- Student immigration: admission and immigration are separate processes.
How Many Universities Are There in Argentina?
The best answer is not one simplified number.
Argentina’s official May 2026 register classifies institutions according to their legal status. The four principal domestic categories contain:
| Official category | Institutions |
|---|---|
| National/state universities and university institutes | 64 |
| Private universities and university institutes with definitive authorisation | 54 |
| Private universities and university institutes with provisional authorisation | 19 |
| Recognised provincial university institutions | 10 |
| Total across these four domestic categories | 147 |
The same official register separately identifies:
- FLACSO — Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales, Argentina under the international-organisation category; and
- Universidad de Bologna — Representation in the Argentine Republic under the foreign-university category.
It then separately lists research and professional-training organisations. Those organisations should not simply be added to the university count.
This distinction matters because an old university directory can easily overstate the number of universities by counting faculties, research centres, professional associations, language organisations or branches as separate universities.
For students, the practical rule is simple: use the official university register to establish institutional status, then verify the exact degree separately.
Best Universities in Argentina 2027
There is no government-issued universal ranking declaring one institution “the best university in Argentina” for every purpose.
The latest QS global edition available for 2027 was published on 18 June 2026. QS lists 16 Argentine institutions in its 2027 world ranking.

These are QS positions and ranking bands, not University Encyclopedia rankings. Universities inside the same QS band should not be given invented national positions that QS itself does not provide.
What Is the No. 1 University in Argentina?
According to the QS World University Rankings 2027, Universidad de Buenos Aires is Argentina’s leading institution.
Universidad de Buenos Aires — UBA
QS World Rank 2027: No. 84
UBA’s overall QS score is 72.3, while its Academic Reputation indicator is 98.1 in the 2027 table.
Its lead is substantial: Argentina’s next institution in the same QS global edition, Universidad Nacional de La Plata, is =474.
That makes UBA the most prominent Argentine university in this particular global ranking, but it does not mean UBA must be the best choice for every student or subject.
A prospective engineering student, for example, may want to compare broad universities such as UBA, UNLP and UNC with technologically focused options such as UTN and ITBA. A business or economics student may also investigate UCA, Austral, San Andrés, Torcuato Di Tella, UADE and other specialist environments.
Overall ranking is a useful starting point. Program fit should make the final decision.
Argentina in Regional and Research Rankings
Students should not mix different ranking systems as if they measure the same thing.
In the QS World University Rankings: Latin America & The Caribbean 2026, UBA ranks No. 10 in the region, UNLP No. 21, Universidad Austral No. 25, UNC No. 33 and UCA No. 40. That regional edition was published on 1 October 2025.
A different picture appears when a research-oriented methodology is used. ShanghaiRanking places UBA in the 201–300 band in the 2025 Academic Ranking of World Universities — ARWU. ARWU uses a different set of research-oriented indicators, including highly cited researchers, major academic awards and publication measures.
Therefore:
QS World 2027 ≠ QS Latin America & Caribbean 2026 ≠ ARWU 2025.
Each ranking has its own edition year, methodology and purpose.
A responsible university comparison should always identify the ranking provider, edition and category rather than describe a ranking position as an official government judgment.
Universidad de Buenos Aires — UBA
UBA is the central name in most international comparisons of Argentine higher education.
Its No. 84 position in QS 2027 places it inside the global Top 100 in that ranking. In QS Latin America & The Caribbean 2026, it ranks No. 10.
For undergraduate entry, UBA uses the Ciclo Básico Común — CBC, the common first cycle for its degree programs. UBA’s current admissions information states that entry is unrestricted and does not require a general admission examination. Its CBC guidance also states that undergraduate degree studies are free for Argentine citizens and foreigners.
International applicants who completed secondary education outside Argentina must follow the applicable recognition or convalidation process. UBA also states that applicants whose secondary qualification was issued in a non-Spanish-speaking country must provide an accepted Spanish certificate; its current foreign-student guidance identifies SIELE Global at C1 or UBA’s own advanced Spanish certificate equivalent to C1.
For a student considering UBA, the key questions are therefore not simply “Can I enter?” but:
- Is my previous education correctly recognised?
- Which CBC route applies to my degree?
- Do I satisfy the Spanish requirement?
- What documentation must I complete?
- What immigration status will I hold while studying?
Universidad Nacional de La Plata — UNLP
UNLP is Argentina’s second-highest institution in QS 2027 at =474 globally and ranks No. 21 in QS Latin America & The Caribbean 2026.
The university’s current information for foreign applicants describes UNLP as public, free and without admission quotas, with 17 faculties and more than 165 undergraduate and pre-degree qualifications.
Its foreign-applicant rules are particularly useful because they show why students should not generalise one university’s process to the entire country.
For the 2026 entry cycle, UNLP established an application period from 10 November to 12 December 2025. Foreign applicants could use a passport or identity document from their country of origin in the application process. The university also requires applicants whose native language is not Spanish to demonstrate sufficient Spanish; it recognises CELU and its own academic Spanish certification, while individual academic units determine the required level and may accept equivalent qualifications.
Students targeting a later intake should use the latest UNLP cycle published for that year rather than copying dates from a previous admissions cycle.
Pontificia Universidad Católica Argentina — UCA
Pontificia Universidad Católica Argentina is one of Argentina’s strongest-ranked private universities in the current QS global table.
QS World University Rankings 2027: =530
QS Latin America & The Caribbean 2026: No. 40
UCA demonstrates an important structural difference between public and private higher education: private universities operate their own fee systems.
For example, UCA’s 2026 payment rules for undergraduate and pre-degree study use an enrolment charge followed by monthly university charges under the applicable schedule. This is evidence of why a national generic figure for “private university tuition in Argentina” can be misleading. The cost must be checked for the actual university, program and intake.
Universidad Austral
Universidad Austral is also =530 in QS World University Rankings 2027, tied in rank with UCA in that edition. It stands even higher regionally at No. 25 in QS Latin America & The Caribbean 2026.
As with every private institution, students should compare the actual degree curriculum, admission conditions, tuition, scholarship opportunities and campus rather than assume that an overall global position answers every program-level question.
Universidad de Palermo
Universidad de Palermo appears in the 781–790 band in QS World University Rankings 2027 and No. 95 in QS Latin America & The Caribbean 2026.
It is one of several private institutions that add considerable depth to Buenos Aires as a higher-education centre.
For private universities such as Palermo, the financially important questions are the current program fee, how frequently it can change, whether the quoted amount covers all academic charges and which scholarships or discounts apply to the individual applicant.
Universidad Nacional de Córdoba — UNC
Universidad Nacional de Córdoba is in the 801–850 band globally in QS 2027 and ranks No. 33 in QS Latin America & The Caribbean 2026.
Its presence makes Córdoba one of Argentina’s most important alternatives to Buenos Aires for university study.
Students should check the intended faculty directly because admission procedures, course organisation and international-student requirements can vary within a large comprehensive university.
Other Universities Worth Comparing
Argentina’s higher-education choice extends well beyond the first six institutions in a global ranking.
Depending on subject and study style, students may also investigate:
- Universidad Nacional de Rosario;
- Universidad Nacional de Cuyo;
- Universidad Nacional del Litoral;
- Universidad Nacional de San Martín;
- Universidad Nacional del Sur;
- Universidad Nacional de Tucumán;
- Universidad Nacional de Mar del Plata;
- Universidad Nacional de Quilmes;
- Universidad Tecnológica Nacional;
- Instituto Tecnológico de Buenos Aires;
- Universidad de San Andrés;
- Universidad Torcuato Di Tella;
- Universidad Argentina de la Empresa;
- Universidad de Belgrano;
- Universidad del CEMA;
- Universidad Favaloro;
- Universidad Hospital Italiano de Buenos Aires;
- Universidad Siglo 21.
These institutions belong to different legal categories and have very different missions. Argentina’s official register should therefore be used to confirm status rather than relying on a commercial directory.
Public Universities in Argentina
Argentina has a particularly large state university network.
The May 2026 official register contains 64 national/state universities and university institutes. This category includes institutions such as:
- Universidad de Buenos Aires;
- Universidad Nacional de La Plata;
- Universidad Nacional de Córdoba;
- Universidad Nacional de Rosario;
- Universidad Nacional de Cuyo;
- Universidad Nacional del Litoral;
- Universidad Nacional del Sur;
- Universidad Nacional de Tucumán;
- Universidad Nacional de Mar del Plata;
- Universidad Nacional de San Martín;
- Universidad Nacional de Quilmes;
- Universidad Tecnológica Nacional.
UTN is an especially useful example of why a directory must distinguish a university from its branches or regional units. The official national register counts Universidad Tecnológica Nacional as one national university institution, rather than treating every regional faculty as a different university.
Private Universities in Argentina
The official May 2026 register separates private institutions into two legal groups:
54 with definitive authorisation
and
19 with provisional authorisation.
The definitively authorised group includes major names such as:
- Pontificia Universidad Católica Argentina;
- Universidad Austral;
- Universidad de Palermo;
- Universidad de San Andrés;
- Universidad Torcuato Di Tella;
- Instituto Tecnológico de Buenos Aires;
- Universidad Argentina de la Empresa;
- Universidad de Belgrano;
- Universidad Favaloro;
- Universidad del CEMA;
- Universidad del Salvador;
- Universidad Siglo 21.
The legal category matters. Students should confirm the institution’s current status and then verify the specific degree rather than assuming that every private institution has exactly the same authorisation history.
Are Public Universities in Argentina Free for International Students?
Some remain free for international students, but the correct answer in 2027 planning is university-specific.
This question changed materially in 2025.
DNU 366/2025 amended Article 2 bis of Argentina’s Higher Education Law. Under the amended provision, undergraduate study at state higher-education institutions is guaranteed free for Argentine citizens and foreigners with permanent residence. State institutions may establish charges for people outside those categories, while non-permanent residents can still receive scholarships where institutional statutes or agreements provide for them.
But the law does not create one mandatory national fee that every non-permanent foreign student must pay.
That distinction is critical.
UBA’s current CBC admissions page explicitly states that its degree studies are free for Argentine citizens and foreigners. UNLP’s current international-applicant information describes the institution as public and free.
Therefore, these statements are both wrong:
“Every international student studies free at every Argentine public university.”
and
“Every international student must now pay tuition at every Argentine public university.”
The accurate approach is:
Check the law, then check the individual university’s current written policy.
Tuition Fees in Argentina
There is no credible single figure for “university tuition in Argentina.”
A student’s cost can change according to:
- public or private institution;
- residence status;
- university policy;
- undergraduate or postgraduate level;
- program or faculty;
- scholarship or financial-aid status;
- intake and payment schedule.
For state universities, the 2025 legal change means that foreign applicants without permanent residence must check current institutional policy rather than assuming either free study or a national foreign-student fee.
For private universities, fees are institution-specific. UCA’s 2026 payment framework, for example, uses an enrolment charge and a series of monthly charges for undergraduate and pre-degree programs.
Postgraduate programs also need to be treated separately from undergraduate study. A public university’s undergraduate tuition policy does not mean that every master’s, doctorate, specialisation or professional postgraduate program is free.
Argentina’s price environment also makes stale fee tables particularly risky. Students making a financial decision should obtain the university’s current program-specific fee schedule and establish what is included before paying an application, enrolment or reservation charge.
International Students in Argentina
Argentina has a significant history of foreign enrolment, particularly in its public university system.
The explanatory material accompanying DNU 366/2025 cites government figures showing foreign enrolment in state university institutions increasing from 35,202 in 2015 to 82,797 in 2023. The same decree cites 326,421 pre-degree and undergraduate students at UBA in 2023, including 38,185 foreign students. These are 2023 figures cited in the 2025 decree and should not be presented as 2027 enrolment statistics.
For prospective students, the more important point is that international admission remains highly institution-specific.
Argentina does not operate one universal national undergraduate application portal for all universities. The federal guidance for foreigners says enrolment is carried out at the institution where the student plans to study.
How to Apply to Universities in Argentina
A practical international-student pathway is:
1. Choose a Recognised University
Begin with Argentina’s official register.
Do not rely only on a search-engine result, social-media advertisement or an agent’s description of an institution.
2. Verify the Exact Degree
Recognition of the university does not automatically answer every question about the qualification.
Check whether the exact title or qualification is official and has national validity. Argentina maintains public systems for checking recognised institutions and titles.
3. Read the University’s Admission Rules
Universities manage their own applications.
UBA routes undergraduate applicants through the CBC and does not use a general admission examination. UNLP publishes its own annual application window and requirements. Other universities may use entrance tests, interviews, preparatory study, documentation review or program-specific processes.
4. Prepare Foreign Academic Documents
Argentina’s federal guidance tells students coming from abroad to prepare relevant academic documents, passport and other required records, with legalisation or apostille where applicable. Documents issued in another language may require an official Spanish translation.
A university may also require recognition, convalidation or other validation of prior secondary study.
5. Meet the Spanish Requirement
Do not assume that admission to Argentina automatically means no language test.
Requirements vary by university and applicant background.
6. Complete Immigration Requirements
University admission does not itself replace the appropriate immigration process.
Students should identify the immigration category that corresponds to a complete degree, exchange, mobility program or other type of study.
7. Recheck the Exact Intake Before Acting
Admission dates are evidence-year specific.
For example, UNLP’s verified 2026 entry window was 10 November–12 December 2025. That date belongs to the 2026 cycle and should not be cosmetically relabelled as a 2027 deadline.
Spanish Requirements for International Students
Spanish proficiency can be a decisive admission requirement.
At UBA, applicants whose secondary qualification was issued in a non-Spanish-speaking country are currently directed to provide either:
- SIELE Global at C1, or
- UBA’s Advanced Spanish certificate equivalent to C1.
At UNLP, applicants whose native language is not Spanish must demonstrate adequate Spanish. The university recognises CELU and its own Certificado de Español Académico — CertEA — while individual academic units determine the level required and may accept equivalent qualifications.
The decision rule is therefore:
There is no single nationwide Spanish score for every university in Argentina.
Check the exact institution and academic unit.
Can You Study in Argentina in English?
Students should not assume that a full degree will be available in English.
The current UBA and UNLP rules demonstrate that Spanish proficiency is an important issue for international applicants. English-taught courses, exchange modules or postgraduate offerings may exist at particular institutions, but availability must be verified at program level rather than inferred from the university’s international profile.
For most applicants planning a complete degree, the safest strategy is to treat Spanish capability as a major part of university preparation unless the specific program states otherwise.
Scholarships in Argentina for International Students
International students should search for funding by nationality, study level, university, field and mobility program.
Argentina’s official Campus Argentina Global platform publishes scholarship opportunities for foreigners in Argentina as well as opportunities for Argentines abroad. It covers international academic mobility involving students, graduates, academics, researchers and other participants.
The important point is that there is not one automatic national scholarship attached to admission at every Argentine university.
International funding may come through:
- government programs;
- bilateral agreements;
- regional mobility arrangements;
- individual universities;
- foundations;
- international organisations;
- research programs;
- exchange agreements.
The 2025 amendment to the Higher Education Law also explicitly allows foreign students without permanent residence to receive scholarships where university statutes or agreements provide for them.
Students should therefore search the current scholarship cycle rather than depend on a static list copied from a previous year.
Scholarships in Argentina for Local Students
Domestic scholarship intent is different from international scholarship intent.
One of the major current national systems is Progresar.
As of 13 August 2026, the government’s published schedule states that the Second Convocatoria 2026 for Progresar Superior runs from 18 August to 11 September 2026. Progresar Superior serves eligible students in university, non-university higher education and nursing programs, subject to its current socioeconomic, academic and other requirements.
Universities can also operate their own financial-aid systems.
For example, Universidad de San Andrés states that its Beca San Andrés can cover up to 100% of tuition, based on entrance performance and the family’s financial circumstances, with possible subsidised accommodation for eligible students living more than 50 kilometres from the campus.
That distinction is important:
international scholarship search and domestic scholarship search should never be treated as the same market.
Recognition, National Validity and Accreditation
One of the most valuable checks a student can make is to separate three different questions:
1. Is the Institution Recognised?
Use Argentina’s official university-system register.
2. Is the Exact Qualification Official and Nationally Valid?
Argentina’s university authorities maintain public registers for official institutions and university titles with national validity.
3. Does the Program Require or Hold CONEAU Accreditation?
CONEAU — Comisión Nacional de Evaluación y Acreditación Universitaria — accredits undergraduate programs whose qualifications have been declared of public interest under the applicable Higher Education Law framework. It also maintains accreditation systems for postgraduate study.
Not every undergraduate degree should be described as a CONEAU-accredited program simply because it is offered by a recognised university.
For postgraduate study, CONEAU’s Carreras de Posgrado de Argentina 2026 publication contains 4,409 specialisations, master’s programs and doctorates with accreditation in force in 2026.
This gives students a much stronger decision method than checking the university name alone.
Medicine and Other Regulated Fields
For medicine, engineering and other professionally regulated fields, the exact qualification matters as much as the university.
Applicants should investigate:
- current program accreditation where required;
- official and national validity of the degree;
- clinical or practical training structure;
- teaching language;
- professional licensing requirements;
- recognition in the country where they eventually intend to practise.
CONEAU’s undergraduate accreditation system specifically covers qualifications declared to be of public interest, and it provides a searchable record of accredited programs.
International students who plan to practise outside Argentina should separately investigate recognition and licensing in the destination country.
Student Residence in Argentina
Foreign students should separate university admission from immigration status.
Argentina provides a temporary student-residence route for foreigners enrolled as regular students in recognised public or private educational institutions. Current government guidance requires documentation relating to identity, immigration status and student enrolment, with additional documentation depending on the applicant’s circumstances.
The process can begin through the RaDEX system. The government currently states that temporary student residence is granted for one year and is renewable.
Different procedures can apply to:
- complete degree students;
- exchange students;
- international mobility participants;
- short or partial study;
- applicants from MERCOSUR countries;
- applicants from outside MERCOSUR.
Students should therefore identify their exact route rather than treating “Argentina student visa” as one universal procedure.
Universities to Investigate for Medicine and Health Sciences
A useful starting shortlist includes:
- Universidad de Buenos Aires;
- Universidad Nacional de La Plata;
- Universidad Nacional de Córdoba;
- Universidad Nacional de Rosario;
- Universidad Nacional de Cuyo;
- Universidad Austral;
- Pontificia Universidad Católica Argentina;
- Universidad Favaloro;
- Universidad Hospital Italiano de Buenos Aires.
This is not a University Encyclopedia subject ranking. It is a research shortlist for students who should next compare the exact medical or health program, accreditation, clinical environment, admission rules and professional-recognition pathway.
For medicine in particular, selecting the university only from an overall world-ranking position would be an incomplete decision.
Universities to Investigate for Engineering and Technology
A strong research shortlist includes:
- Universidad de Buenos Aires;
- Universidad Nacional de La Plata;
- Universidad Nacional de Córdoba;
- Universidad Tecnológica Nacional;
- Instituto Tecnológico de Buenos Aires;
- Universidad Nacional de Rosario;
- Universidad Nacional del Sur;
- Universidad Nacional de Cuyo.
UTN deserves particular attention because it is a national technological university operating through a geographically distributed structure while remaining one university institution in the official national register.
ITBA provides a private technology-focused alternative and appears in the 1201–1400 band in QS World University Rankings 2027.
Universities to Investigate for Business and Economics
Students considering business, economics, finance or management may compare:
- Universidad de Buenos Aires;
- Universidad Torcuato Di Tella;
- Universidad de San Andrés;
- Universidad Austral;
- Pontificia Universidad Católica Argentina;
- Universidad Argentina de la Empresa;
- Universidad del CEMA;
- Universidad de Palermo.
Several of these institutions appear in QS 2027, but overall university ranking should be combined with curriculum, faculty, employer links, internship opportunities, cost and specialist program reputation.
Universities to Investigate for Science and Research
Students seeking broad research environments can begin with:
- Universidad de Buenos Aires;
- Universidad Nacional de La Plata;
- Universidad Nacional de Córdoba;
- Universidad Nacional de Rosario;
- Universidad Nacional de Cuyo;
- Universidad Nacional del Litoral;
- Universidad Nacional del Sur;
- Universidad Nacional de San Martín.
UBA’s position illustrates why different ranking systems matter: it is No. 84 in QS World University Rankings 2027 but sits in the 201–300 band in ARWU 2025, whose methodology gives substantial weight to research outputs and internationally recognised academic achievement.
Best University Cities in Argentina
Buenos Aires
Buenos Aires has the country’s greatest concentration of Argentine institutions appearing near the top of the current QS global list.
The metropolitan university environment includes UBA, UCA, Universidad de Palermo, UADE, Universidad de Belgrano, Universidad de San Andrés, Universidad Torcuato Di Tella, ITBA and other institutions.
For students who want maximum institutional choice, a large academic environment and access to multiple public and private options, Buenos Aires is the obvious starting point.
La Plata
La Plata is centred on Universidad Nacional de La Plata, ranked =474 in QS 2027 and No. 21 in QS Latin America & The Caribbean 2026.
UNLP’s scale, public status and international-applicant guidance make La Plata a serious alternative for students who want access to a major comprehensive university outside the centre of Buenos Aires.
Córdoba
Córdoba is one of Argentina’s strongest university centres outside the Buenos Aires region.
Universidad Nacional de Córdoba is in the 801–850 band in QS 2027 and No. 33 in the 2026 QS regional ranking.
Students should also investigate the city’s other public and private institutions according to subject.
Rosario
Rosario is anchored by Universidad Nacional de Rosario, which appears in the 1001–1200 band in QS 2027.
It is particularly relevant to students who want a major Argentine urban and academic environment outside Buenos Aires and Córdoba.
Mendoza
Mendoza’s principal national university is Universidad Nacional de Cuyo, listed at 1201–1400 in QS 2027.
For students comparing western Argentina, Mendoza provides a substantial university environment with options across multiple disciplines.
Santa Fe
Universidad Nacional del Litoral makes Santa Fe another significant public-university centre. UNL is included among Argentina’s institutions in the QS 2027 global table and was =87 in QS Latin America & The Caribbean 2026.
Is Argentina Good for International Students?
Argentina can be a strong choice for students who want:
- a large university system;
- access to public and private institutions;
- a major Spanish-speaking academic environment;
- several important regional university cities;
- an institution inside the QS global Top 100;
- options across medicine, engineering, sciences, humanities, business and social sciences.
But the destination requires careful planning.
The strongest potential advantages can become problems if a student assumes that:
- every public university is automatically free for every foreign applicant;
- every Argentine university uses the same admissions process;
- Spanish requirements are identical;
- recognition of the university automatically proves everything about the degree;
- admission automatically gives the correct immigration status;
- old tuition or scholarship data is still current.
Argentina is therefore best approached as a university-by-university decision, supported by official national systems.
How to Choose the Best University in Argentina
Before committing to a university, answer these questions in order.
Is the institution officially recognised?
Start with the government register.
Is the exact degree official and nationally valid?
Verify the qualification, not only the institution.
Does the program require accreditation?
Check CONEAU where applicable.
How strong is the university for my subject?
Use overall rankings only as one input.
What language level is required?
Check the exact university and academic unit.
How do I enter?
Determine whether the university uses a common cycle, entrance examination, documentation process, interview or another route.
What will I actually pay?
Check the current written fee policy for your residence status, degree level and program.
Is financial aid available to me?
Separate international-student funding from domestic scholarship systems.
What immigration route applies?
Check whether you are entering for a complete degree, exchange, mobility program or another type of study.
Where do I want to live?
Compare Buenos Aires with alternatives such as La Plata, Córdoba, Rosario, Mendoza and Santa Fe.
Where will I work after graduating?
If the profession is regulated, investigate future licensing and qualification recognition before enrolling.
Frequently Asked Questions

According to QS World University Rankings 2027, Universidad de Buenos Aires is the highest-ranked Argentine university at No. 84 globally. “Best” still depends on the student’s subject, budget and goals.
Is UBA in the Top 100 universities in the world?
Yes. UBA ranks No. 84 in QS World University Rankings 2027.
What is Argentina’s second-highest-ranked university?
Universidad Nacional de La Plata is =474 in QS World University Rankings 2027, the next Argentine institution after UBA in that table.
How many universities are there in Argentina?
The May 2026 official register should be read by category. It contains 147 entries across the four main domestic university-level categories: 64 national/state, 54 definitively authorised private, 19 provisionally authorised private and 10 recognised provincial institutions. FLACSO Argentina and the University of Bologna representation are listed separately under special categories.
Are public universities in Argentina free?
Under current federal law, undergraduate study at state institutions is guaranteed free for Argentine citizens and foreigners with permanent residence. Institutions may charge people outside those categories. However, individual universities can maintain policies that are more favourable to foreign students; UBA currently states that its degree studies are free for Argentine citizens and foreigners.
Do all foreign students now pay tuition at Argentine public universities?
No. The 2025 amendment permits state institutions to establish charges for students outside the guaranteed free-study categories; it does not create one compulsory national fee for every foreign student. University-specific policy must be checked.
Can international students apply to UBA?
Yes. UBA publishes a dedicated route for foreign students. Undergraduate entry begins through the CBC, and UBA states that applicants do not take a general admission examination.
Do international students need Spanish for UBA?
Applicants whose secondary qualification was issued in a non-Spanish-speaking country are currently required by UBA to provide an accepted Spanish certificate, including SIELE Global at C1 or UBA’s Advanced Spanish certificate equivalent to C1.
Does UNLP accept international students?
Yes. UNLP publishes specific rules for foreign applicants and describes itself as public, free and without admission quotas. Spanish certification requirements apply where relevant.
Are scholarships available for international students?
Yes, but funding is not automatic. Campus Argentina Global publishes opportunities for foreigners studying in Argentina, and additional funding can depend on nationality, university, study level or international agreement.
Are there scholarships for Argentine students?
Yes. Progresar is a major national educational-support system. The government announced that the second 2026 application period for Progresar Superior runs from 18 August to 11 September 2026, subject to eligibility rules.
How do I know whether an Argentine degree is recognised?
Check the institution in the official university register and verify the exact qualification through Argentina’s public records for official institutions and nationally valid university titles. For programs subject to accreditation, also check CONEAU.
How do international students apply in Argentina?
There is no single national application portal for all universities. Federal guidance states that enrolment is handled by the individual institution.
Do I need student residence to study in Argentina?
The appropriate immigration process depends on nationality, duration and type of study. Argentina provides a temporary student-residence route for regular students in recognised institutions; the current government page states that it is granted for one year and can be renewed.
Which Argentine city has the most university choice?
Buenos Aires has the greatest concentration of institutions appearing among Argentina’s leading universities in QS 2027, while La Plata, Córdoba, Rosario, Mendoza and Santa Fe are major alternatives.
Final Guide to Studying in Argentina in 2027
Argentina should no longer be understood through an outdated directory or the simple claim that “public university is free for every foreign student.”
The current picture is more useful.
The official May 2026 register shows a 147-institution domestic university-level system across four main legal categories, plus two separately classified international or foreign-university presences.
At the top of the current global ranking picture stands:
Universidad de Buenos Aires — No. 84 in QS World University Rankings 2027.
UNLP, UCA, Universidad Austral, Universidad de Palermo, UNC and a broader group of public and private universities expand the choice considerably.
For international students, the biggest decision change is the 2025 tuition framework. Foreign students without permanent residence should not assume that every state university must remain tuition-free—but they should equally avoid assuming that every institution now charges them. UBA and UNLP demonstrate why the actual university policy must be checked.
A strong 2027 study decision should therefore follow this sequence:
Find the university.
Verify its legal status.
Verify the exact degree.
Check accreditation where applicable.
Compare rankings without mixing methodologies.
Confirm admission requirements.
Meet the Spanish requirement.
Get the current tuition policy in writing.
Search separately for international or domestic scholarships.
Complete the correct immigration process.
Then choose the university and city that best fit your academic, financial and professional goals.
